Does anyone have a good tip for removal of commercial road grit used when icy. There is some caked on carpet. ?

vacuum thoroughly then use OXY CLEAN , vacuum again preferably with a wet and dry vac or shop vac and repeat with another round of OXY CLEAN may take some elbow grease

the grit is sand and salt. there is no easy way to clean this. Steam clean repeatedly using lots of water. It will probably take several tries to get it all out.

What you’re dealing with is grit and oils. First, vacuum like crazy. Then prespot with a de-greasing agent. Ammonia or grease lightning will work. But you may be better off going to a cleaning supply store for a carpet degreaser.
Of course, hiring a professional carpet cleaner may be your best bet.

Just get it professionally done! I have a place that I use all the time here in Austin http://www.hartscarpetcleaning.com – it’s really not that expensive and it can save you a lot of trouble and make your carpet last longer.
